Irish Soda Bread

March 16, 2015 by Angela LeMoine 33 Comments

Irish Soda Bread | LeMoine Family Kitchen. I've made this recipe so many times and every time it is PERFECT! Perfect for St. Patricks Day or just because!

Weather you are Irish or not {like me}, everyone is a little Irish on St Patricks Day. We celebrated a little early, having our family over yesterday for the whole 9 yards… corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, carrots and of course Irish Soda Bread! I LOVE Irish Soda Bread!! I don’t know why we only eat it once a year, thats just crazy! Its so so good! Nice crusty exterior, tender raisin packed inside and just perfect with some Irish butter!

This was the first time I made my own Irish Soda Bread and it came out so good that I made 3 loaves! This bread is really pretty simple to make. You mix the ingredients in a bowl and knead a few times then bake until golden. There are so many variations out there for Irish Soda Bread; with or without raisins, sweet or not, some use caraway seeds. Heres what I think, make the kind that you will enjoy eating. I happen to love raisins so mine is pretty well packed with them. This bread is very lightly sweetened. This bread is best served fresh out of the oven or within a day or two slightly warmed in the oven. I also love to sliced, toast and slater with Irish style butter, its so so delicious!

  • 6 Tbsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¾- 1 cup raisins
  • 1½ cups buttermilk

  2. In a bowl, stir together the dry ingredients, the flours, sugar, salt, baking powder and baking soda.
  3. Stir in the raisins to distribute evenly.
  4. Stir in the buttermilk until mostly combined, Do not over mix.
  5. Pour the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead 5-6 times to bring the ingredients all together and form the loaf.
